In 1993, Dance in Flight began with 10 dancers who were interested in expressing themselves through movement, initially performing for a modest audience in the intimate Lindhurst Theatre. Over time, dedicated and perseverant students as well as support from the Pepperdine and larger community enabled the company to flourish. Over 25 years later, DIF has grown to become a renowned on-campus club that continues to create memorable, sold-out performances in Smothers Theatre each year. Shows consist of an electrifying blend of ballet, modern, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, tap, ballroom, and more. Originally showcasing these diverse styles in a recital-like format, DIF has expanded creatively to present the same eclectic artistry within a cohesive theme or narrative, which often addresses key issues, shares important messages, and offers something greater than visual entertainment to its audiences. DIF has also grown to partner with various groups and non-profits, participating in outreach performances, and hosting community classes—recognizing the power and potential in dance's ability to impact, educate, and serve others.
